Trails Vision
Trails Mission
Increase the number and variety of recreational trails available to the Coal Creek Canyon community in order to promote physical fitness, outdoor education, and general enjoyment of the area’s mountain environment.
Goals
- Preserve access to existing local trails.
- Establish new trails to provide additional recreational opportunities.
- Establish connections among existing trail systems and public land in the region.
Types of Trails
The intent is to provide local trails that access varying terrain, with the following interests and needs in mind:
- Non-motorized fitness activities, including cycling, hiking, and trail running. Moderate to advanced terrain, varying lengths.
- Educational nature walks, families and children. Easy to moderate terrain, short distances.
- People with disabilities. Accessible terrain of easy to moderate difficulty.
- Horseback riding.
Potential Trail Opportunities
Following are some of the trail possibilities that have been suggested for the CCCPRD to focus on. These are only ideas at this time, and each one will require research into land ownership and other issues that may be present in each area. It is understood that CCCPRD does not own any of the properties associated with the trail locations mentioned below.
Doudy Draw to White Ranch. A multi-use regional north/south trail that connects Boulder County open space to Jefferson County open space. This trail would likely connect to the Doudy Draw/Springbrook/Flatirons Vista trail system to the north, and to White Ranch on the south. Positioning of the trail would be on the plains and/or in the lower foothills along this corridor.
Walker Ranch to Golden Gate State Park. This primarily north/south route would connect Walker Ranch and Golden Gate State Park, two of the area’s most important and well-established trail systems. The trail would inevitably intersect Highway 72, creating a midway access point and possibilities for point-to-point travel to and from Walker Ranch and Golden Gate from that intersection.
Crescent Meadows. The Crescent Meadows area of Walker Ranch offers mild terrain, which would be well suited for families, children, seniors, and people with disabilities. This would most likely be a short (1 to 2 mile) loop, which would connect to the existing Crescent Meadows trailhead.
Asel Property. The Asel property, which is part of Jefferson County Open Space, is accessible from Highway 72 near Chapel in the Hills Church. A social trail currently exists there, which extends to the top (north) edge of the property. One possibility for the Asel property would be to improve the existing social trail.
Lower Coal Creek Canyon Park This Jefferson County Open Space land is located in the lower foothills, straddling the district’s eastern boundary, south of Highway 72. The property presents numerous possibilities for loop trails.
